The Secret to FABULOUS Hanging Baskets
If you’ve ever bought a hanging basket that looked beautiful in the store… only to have it thin out or dry up a few weeks later, you are not alone.
The truth is, those big, overflowing baskets don’t happen by accident. There is a method behind that fullness, and once you know it, you can recreate it every single season.
Let me show you exactly how to build a hanging basket that stays full, healthy, and blooming.
Hanging Baskets are a summertime staple, but they can be challenging…
Beautiful hanging baskets are not about luck, they are about knowing what your plants need.
Start with a bigger basket, plant it full, feed it well, and do not be afraid to trim it back when it needs a reset.
That is the secret, but keep reading for all the details!

Steps to Growing Fabulous Hanging Baskets at Home
Start with the Right Size Basket
This is where most people go wrong.
Start with at least a 12-inch basket
For best results, go bigger, 14 to 18 inches is ideal
Larger baskets:
Hold more soil
Retain moisture longer
Support stronger root systems
And all of that leads to a fuller, healthier basket.
Plant Densely and With Purpose
If you want that lush, overflowing look, you cannot plant too sparsely.
Use the classic “thriller, filler, spiller” method:
Thriller (your focal point)
Upright plants like geraniums or coleusFiller (adds body and fullness)
Petunias or calibrachoaSpiller (trails over the edge)
Verbena, bacopa, or ivy
👉 The key here is to plant a little tighter than you normally would. This is what gives you that full, finished look right from the start.
Use the Right Soil and Set Yourself Up for Success
Hanging baskets dry out faster than anything else in your garden, so your soil mix really matters.
Use a high-quality potting mix (never garden soil)
Add coconut coir or peat to help retain moisture
Mix in a slow-release fertilizer at planting
Optional, but helpful, add water-retaining crystals
This combination helps your basket stay evenly moist and well-fed.
Feed Regularly (This Is Non-Negotiable)
If you want continuous blooms, you have to feed your plants.
Apply liquid fertilizer every 1 to 2 weeks
During peak season, once a week is even better
Always start with a slow-release fertilizer in the soil
Consistent feeding is what keeps your basket full and blooming instead of fading halfway through the season.
Prune to Keep It Looking Fresh
This is the step most people skip… and it makes the biggest difference.
Cut plants back by one-third to one-half mid-season
Remove spent blooms and any leggy growth
Fertilize right after pruning to push fresh growth
And here is the part to remember:
👉 Do not be afraid to cut your blooms back halfway during the season. It makes a huge difference.
Within a couple of weeks, your basket will flush back out even fuller than before. Send me pics on Instagram, I’d love to see them! XOXO, Carmen
